Satellite Data to Combat Food and Water Crises

This internationally operating company uses satellite data to accurately measure, on a global scale, where and how much water is present in the soil. Given the changing climate and the rapidly growing global population, this information is crucial in combating the food and water crises. With this investment, the company is able to further develop the technology and make more hectares of (agricultural) land more sustainable. Currently, the data is being used for more than 100 million hectares worldwide. Globally, 80% of all crop damage is related to water. The more precise the water data is, the better agricultural land can be utilized to achieve higher crop yields. Reliable and accurate data is essential for this.

Mapping 1 billion hectares of farmland

In addition to its technology, VanderSat has 20 years of scientific research under its belt, enabling it to map every part of the Earth with a resolution of 100 by 100 meters. To do this, the company uses so-called passive microwaves, a technology that measures the Earth’s natural radiation. The combination of scalable, unique technology and the potential to make a global impact has led to an investment from Social Impact Ventures.

Helmer Schukken, partner at Social Impact Ventures: “Especially in the current crisis, we as impact investors are convinced that we must continue to support and invest in businesses…”
